The Journey Begins: From Vietnam to the United States
My story starts in Vietnam. I was born there and lived my early years in a context vastly different from America. But even as a kid, I could see that opportunity existed elsewhere. My family made the decision that would reshape my entire life: immigrate to the United States.
I came to America in 2011 with next to nothing. No connections, no specialized skills, no clear path forward. Just determination and willingness to work. Like many immigrants, I took whatever work was available to survive and build a foundation. I worked as a waiter. I worked as a cashier. I did the jobs that required no special skills but paid the bills.
These early jobs taught me something crucial: work ethic isn’t about having the perfect job. It’s about showing up every single day, doing your best, and proving your reliability. No matter how unglamorous the work, you do it with pride.
Seven Years in the Nail Industry
After a few years of entry-level jobs, I transitioned into the nail industry. This was a pivotal move. For seven years, I worked in the nail industry, and while it might seem unrelated to paint protection film and PPF installation, it was actually where I learned the most valuable business and customer service lessons of my career.
The nail industry is brutal in the best way. It’s customer-facing every single day. Clients are invested in the outcome. They notice imperfection. They come back repeatedly and evaluate every aspect of the experience. I learned how to work with precision. I learned how to handle demanding clients. I learned how to build reputation through consistent quality and genuine care.
I learned that people don’t just pay for technical skill. They pay for the complete experience — how you make them feel, how you listen, how you show up for them. These lessons would transfer directly to the car industry when I made that jump.
After seven years in nails, I had built skills, experience, and a sense that I was capable of something more. But I didn’t know what the “more” was yet. Then COVID-19 changed everything.
The COVID Pivot and Moving to Atlanta
In 2020, COVID-19 shut down businesses across the country. The nail industry was hit hard. Salons closed. Work disappeared. For the first time in seven years, I had to reconsider my path.
During this period of uncertainty, I became fascinated with cars. I started watching videos about paint protection film (PPF). I watched installation videos, learned about the market, understood the opportunity. PPF was a service that required skill, precision, and customer focus — exactly the skills I’d developed in the nail industry. But it was a completely new market with growth potential.
So I made a decision that seemed crazy to many: I would teach myself PPF installation from scratch, in the middle of a pandemic, with no industry connections or reputation. I invested in tools and materials. I watched countless videos. I practiced on spare panels. I consumed everything I could about PPF application, film types, techniques, and the business side.
Around the same time, I made another significant decision: move to Atlanta. I had no family there. I had no friends there. I had no connections in the city. But I sensed that Atlanta had opportunity — a growing market for luxury vehicles and premium services.
So in early 2021, during the pandemic, I moved to Atlanta with my wife and zero industry connections. We had each other and my growing PPF skills. That was the foundation.
Building Zenith PPF From Nothing
The first clients came through word of mouth and by word of my work. I installed PPF on friends’ vehicles. Those friends referred others. Reviews on Google and social media started building. I was relentless about quality because I knew that reputation was the only marketing budget I had.
Every single installation had to be perfect. Not 95% perfect. Perfect. Because I was new in Atlanta. I had zero reputation. The only way to build trust was through undeniable quality and exceptional customer service.
I remember the early days clearly. Small jobs. Low prices because I needed to build the portfolio and reviews. Working late into the night. Constantly improving technique. Reading about new products. Watching other installers’ work and learning from it. Analyzing what worked and what didn’t.
The business grew slowly at first, then more rapidly as the reputation compound. After a year, I could barely keep up with demand. I needed to invest in a proper facility. I needed to hire help. I needed to systematize the business instead of doing everything myself.
Within three years of moving to Atlanta with nothing, Zenith PPF became one of the most respected PPF shops in the city. Not because of luck. Not because of marketing. Because of relentless quality, consistent customer service, and genuine care for every single client.
What This Journey Taught Me About Building Something Real
My path from Vietnam to a successful PPF shop in Atlanta taught me lessons that go far beyond the auto industry:
Work ethic is non-negotiable. There’s no substitute. You can’t fake it. You can’t shortcut it. You show up every day and do excellent work, and eventually, people notice.
Reputation compounds over time. You don’t build a business through one big break. You build it through consistent quality and exceptional service delivered hundreds of times. The reputation compounds.
Customer service is the actual business. It doesn’t matter if you’re installing PPF or painting nails. The business is about making people feel valued and delivering on what you promise.
Willingness to learn is more valuable than existing expertise. I had zero PPF experience when I started. But I had humility, willingness to learn, and determination to master the craft. That was enough.
Changing your environment can change your trajectory. Moving to Atlanta wasn’t easy. But being in a new city where I could build from scratch, without the weight of existing relationships or expectations, actually accelerated growth.
Belief in what you’re building matters. I genuinely believed that I could build something special in the PPF space in Atlanta. That belief sustained me through difficult early days and motivated the relentless work required.
Where Zenith PPF Is Now and What’s Next
Today, Zenith PPF is one of the most trusted and busiest PPF shops in Atlanta. We work on exotic cars, high-performance vehicles, and luxury daily drivers. We have a team of skilled installers. We have systems and processes that ensure consistency. We have clients who come back repeatedly and refer their friends.
But the core mission hasn’t changed: deliver exceptional quality, provide exceptional service, and help people protect their vehicles. The difference is that now we’re doing it at scale with a team, rather than me doing everything myself.
My story isn’t unique in the outline — many immigrants come to America and build successful businesses. What matters is the principle: you don’t need special circumstances to build something real. You need work ethic, customer focus, continuous learning, and enough patience to let compound growth do its thing.
If you’re starting a business. If you’re in a tough period. If you feel like you’re starting from behind: remember that where you start doesn’t determine where you end. It’s the direction you move and the consistency of your effort that matters.
